Your questions answered: exploring India with confidence

India is a continent-sized country of immense beauty and complexity. We understand that planning a journey here can feel both exciting and daunting. This page is designed to provide you with the reassurance and practical information you need to begin your adventure with complete peace of mind.

Ask Nicole: Addressing your concerns about safety, comfort, and the “real India”

Is India safe for a first-time or solo traveller?

Safety is our absolute priority. We bridge the gap between local authenticity and European standards by using only experienced drivers and guides with whom we have built long-standing relationships of trust. For those traveling solo, particularly women, our small-group journeys (maximum 8 guests) provide a secure and supportive community. You can explore with confidence, knowing we have “your back” every step of the way.

What about the dirt, poverty, and intensity I hear about?

Safety is our absolute priority. What is typically included in the price of a tour?

We understand these concerns—the dirt, the directness of people, and the poverty are part of India’s complex reality. At Bharatvaas Travels, we take these concerns seriously and help you put them into perspective. Our “slow travel” philosophy moves you away from overcrowded, frantic tourist routes and into quiet villages and serene landscapes where the beauty, hospitality, and resilience of the country shine through.

Will I have to sacrifice comfort for an authentic experience?

Not at all. We offer “the best of both worlds”—extraordinary local access combined with refined comfort. You will stay in soulful boutique hotels, 350-year-old restored heritage forts, and luxury retreats personally selected by us. Even in remote tribal regions, we ensure our selected hotels are clean, well-maintained, and equipped with air conditioning and private bathrooms with Western-style toilets.

What do you mean by “the real India”?

To us, the real India is found beyond the monuments. it is a “journey inward” found in sincere encounters with local communities, sharing a meal with a farming family, or witnessing a spontaneous ritual in a remote village. It is an India where you don’t just observe the country but actually get to live and experience its traditions as a respectful guest.

What is typically included in the price of a tour?

Most of our itineraries include accommodation (based on two people sharing), an air-conditioned car with an English-speaking driver, entrance fees to all sites, and all activities described in the program. Specific inclusions, such as full-board meals during wellness retreats or domestic flights, are clearly stated on each individual trip page.

What should I budget for items not included?

You should budget for international flights, travel insurance, personal expenses, and tips. For meals not included, you can expect to pay between €3.50 and €11 in local restaurants or up to €25 in high-end heritage hotels.

How do I handle my Indian visa?

Most travellers require a 30-day Tourist E-Visa, which starts from approximately €33. We recommend applying via the official Indian government portal: https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa/.

What are the guidelines for tipping in India?

Tipping is appreciated as local salaries are often low. We recommend at least 10% in restaurants. For your private driver, a tip of approximately €1.20 per day is a thoughtful gesture.

In which languages do you provide support?

We provide professional support in English, Dutch, and French. Our multilingual leadership ensures there are no communication barriers during your preparation or while you are on the ground.

What is the best time of year to visit?

For wildlife and most cultural exploration, October to March is ideal. Some regions, like Ladakh, are best experienced during the summer months from June to September.

How does the tailor-made booking process work?

We start with a free discovery call to listen to your wishes and help shape your vision. For a fee of €100, we then create a detailed, day-by-day personal travel plan. This fee is fully deductible if you choose to book your journey with us.
